The ‘Sierra de Guara,’ this Spanish Canyon region series, is a celebration of my on-going love affair with this country. The area was introduced to me many years ago by a dear friend Anthony. I have visited many times and it is always the same for me – awe, wonder, huge respect for its environment and everything it brings. The landscape is raw, primordial and forever changing. On my walks, I would always have on hand my sketch book, most frequently working in oil pastel, capturing the vividness of the colour changes and formations of the land. The reduction relief was my first response back in the studio trying to capture elements of the devolving geology, the colour chemistry and its early history carved and painted in the rocks of this ‘Sierra de Guara’ country. My last visit was in 2013. Another visit is overdue.
